I'm not a massive fan of puds but I do like an apple or rhubarb crumble with an oat crumble topping.....and proper custard made from scratch.
Not a direct answer but . . .

My best friend at college came from Elland (in between Hudderfield and Halifax). His father was also a true Yorshireman but his mother was Glaswegian. Whenever they had Yorkshire pudding in their house, his father would eat it as starter, with gravy. My friend would have it as an accompaniment to the main course and then his mother would have it as a dessert, with custard!
Oh, to answer your question:

Syrup sponge, with dairy ice cream - or sherry trifle - or pancakes with maple syrup - or . . . . oh, let's face it, if it's sweet I'll like it!

Bit like my dad Buenchico, he's carving the beef asking what's for pud! Today we had sticky toffee pud with custard or lemon meringue pie
How come "Dads" can eat these things, while the daughters only have to look at them to gain 2 stone?!

Plain yoghurt for me unfortunately :-(

Can't you put some fruit in it maidup?
Maidup:
It's because dads get far more exercise. For example, you only need to see how much energy they put into dancing at their daughters' wedding receptions!

My dad reckons you can't fatten a thoroughbred! He's got a tiny paunch, but he' s only 7lb heavier now from when he did his National Service. But boy can he tuck it away!
^^^ lol
Lucky man lluvspikey, good for him.
When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's, we didn't have much in the way of spare money, so all our "afters" had to be cheap to make. Thus they tended to be apple pies, jam roly-polys, spotted dick, rhubarb crumble, etc.

We didn't have a freezer ( or even a 'fridge in the early days ) so ice cream seldom made an appearance. Custard was poured over almost very pudding, and its still my preferred choice. If I am in a restaurant and there is one of those glass cabinets that rotate, they always seem to be full of various posh gateaux. But I will go with the apple pie option every time, if there is one.

I have just remembered another of my Mum's puddings. She was a great maker of jam tarts, with home-made jam of course. I can never remember having shop-bought jam when I was a kid. In fact, I was never able to save up enough of those paper Gollys on the back of Robinson's Jams, in order to get a metal Golly badge !

But every now and then, she would make marmalade tarts as well as jam ones....shear bliss !
Made me feel hungry so I'm off to eat my breakfast (porridge and a banana not exactly exotic but I like it).
Just remembered Lemon Meringue Pie !
