Taking All The Wrapping Off Items Whilst At Till!

I was in a huge Tesco's and the woman in front of me decided that she didnt want to take home all the plastic packaging/wrapping on all her fruit and veg and so while she was waiting in line she unwrapped it all - bags of carrots,apples,the lot! then when she got to the till she just handed the empty packaging with the barcode on to the cashier to scan, and said that she refuses to take home unecessary plastic etc. Well the cashiers face was a picture. She was trying to round up all this loose fruit and veg and it did hold up the queue for a bit.

So do you think 'good for her', for trying to do her bit and not take home all this endless wrapping or do you think she was being daft and a bit petty?

I think it was selfish of her, to hold up the queue and cause the cashier a problem. If I was the cashier I would call a supervisor and ask if it was OK to accept just the empty packs. And surely she could get rid of the packing in a 'green' way when she got home. Stupid woman!!

em, i dont actually know. But think you would still have to put them in a plastic bag when you pick your own though wouldnt you.

daft and absurd, if you don't want the packaging then you can simply choose the loose broccoli, carrots, turnips, plums, and so on, there are only a few fruits like strawberries that come in a punnet, which the market i buy from also sell, so not sure of her logic.

It's OK to have strong 'green' principles but not if you inconvenience other shoppers and staff in the process. People like this are often really insensitive. She probably wanted the attention

Mmm, mixed feelings on this one.

I have a massive issue with unnecessary washing and plastic wrapping of veg in supermarkets, which is why I have a veg box delivered each week.

Had she been in front of me making her point she'd have found a cucumber rammed up her........

but much of the packaging is totally unnecessary, and she can always reuse her own small plastic bags to put fruit in, and you don't need separate bags at the checkout for most veg. I do shop at the market, pick what i want, then stuff the whole lot in a trolley, it ain't as they say rocket, or should that be rucola science..

exactly, i don't see the woman's logic, and had i been standing there, would have perhaps pointed it out.

Why didn't she pay for the stuff then remove the packiging afterwards , leave it in a suitable place in the store ( customer service , perhaps ) then jump in her gas guzzling utility vehicle and proceed home ?

If i pick out my own fruit n veg and put them in one of those little plastic bags then I re-use them for son's packed lunches.

I think in some European towns and cities the supermarket provides a big table after the checkouts where you can take off all the wrappings and also a container bin thing to put them in. My problem is getting the wretched plastic off at home - don't know how I'd manage in a shop.

I think she was trying to make a point and being disrespectful to the till operator. If she`s got a gripe about excess packaging, she should write to the supermarket and put her complains to the right channel (as I did with Morrisons).

If she was so concerned with unnecessary packaging she wouldn't be shopping at a supermarket in the first place. Or she could have done it after it had all been scanned. She sounds like the sort of idiot the poor checkout operators have to deal with every day of the week

I quite often buy loose veg - 2 carrots, 2 spuds and a leek say... at the checkout they often go for a plastic bag for each. I point out they will be fine in my shopper.

Whether she took the packaging home or not, it was there and had been used. Just because she left it in the shop doesn't make her any more green than anyone else. I don't get it. I would have tutted very loudly. lol
