Whats the best thing to substitute it with in a recipe if you dont have it/cant get it?

If you can't get Newky Brown then the world must have ended, but any dark ale will do at a pinch

Lol, not to worry. Have never drank brown ale in my life hence the question.
Wouldn't stout be about the same, if you did half and half with stock.

Have never tried stout either, lol. But both ideas sound great,thankyou!
Venison is particularly good with stout...I saw some in Morrisons the other day. Quite unexpected as I thought of it as a speciality meat. It is also lower in cholesterol than beef.
