Using Milk Chocolate On Cakes

I have several bars of milk chocolate coming up to their sell-by dates so I want to use them on a very large tray bake to be cut into about 18. I know the chocolate will crack when cut and I once heard a tip to add butter or margarine to the melted chocolate before spreading on the cake to prevent this happening. #
Does anyone know how much butter to add please - the proportion etc. Many thanks.

Thanks Mazie - sounds good, is that double cream or single? also does it set hard or remain gooey as I need to store uneaten ones in a tin. :)
Ann, what is the total weight of the chocolate you have? I have a wee recipe for the topping of traybakes which never cracks xx
Sorry Ann didn't see your question.... Will be soft and I would use double cream...But wait for Voddy's recipe will be a good un..

Hi Voddie, thanks for offering me some advice. I am making a tray bake in 2 silicone square containers both 8" square so that will be 16" x 8" pushed together. I have 5 bars of milk chocolate 114g each so I can use as much as I need from those. I was going to make a plain cake not chocolate (as OH doesn't like choc cake!) but it's for a party so I may do one of each. I would love to see your recipe, I usually use Mary Berry's but am always interested in trying other people's recipes too. Do you put butter in with your chocolate icing? x
Mary Berry's chocolate traybake has a ganache topping, the same as Mazie suggested.

I sometimes use this toppINg:

125g butter
300g chocolate
3tbsp golden syrup

Melt altogether either in a bowl over simmering water or in a pot. Just pour it over the top.It is almost fudgy and really nice on a choc cake xx
Sorry, meant to add Mary Barry's is a fab recipe. I have made it a few times.
