Can the body easily digest porridge oats which are eaten uncooked with cold milk? What change do they undergo, if any, when they are eaten as porridge?

I have no scientific knowledge about this but I would imagine that uncooked porridge would lie for a long time in the stomach. Ok if you're a horse but.....
I think the oats would swell up, I think the body would digest oats ok. I wouldn't recommend eating uncooked oats though, why would you?
Has you microwave broken down, ossian?
I think if you were to let them soak over night in the milk, they'd be fine and digestible. I seem to remember seeing some recipes where this was done.
Eccles, that has just reminded me of a museli dish in which you soak everything overnight in apple juice. I can't think what it's called, though. It begins with 'B' I think.
Here's one recipe...there are loads for uncooked/raw porridge.

Eccles???....lol
I am sorry, pasta. I'm having one of those days.
Well there you go, a good reason to eat uncooked oats, I never really thought about muesli and the likes.
Its OK Tilly...being compared/mistaken for eccles is a compliment. x
I put them in bread in the breadmaker (you also see them on the outside of some loaves) so they are not exactly cooked as such but they are still digested.

I don't think anything is added to oats to make them into porridge oats, I think the oats are just rolled to flatten them.

I used to roll oats for animal feed many years ago, noisy, dusty bloody job lol

I always add uncooked porridge to my bran or muesli.
I need to retract my answer @08.32. It was posted without proper thought.
As long as you have a decent amount of milk with them and perhaps a drink I don't see a problem. Your body will tell you if you need more moisture with them.

Pasta, our answers are so frequently the same I think we are interchangeable :-) Thank you for your kind comment.
Raw oats are fine. It's the starches that are in them that undergo a change with cooking, making them more readily digestable. For the same reason that cocoa made from cocoa powder is a dual purpose drink. Made from merely hot water, the raw starches can help keep to you awake. But if it's boiled, the starches are converted and it can help you get to sleep.
And thank you eccles,x :-)
