Milkshakes... milk or ice cream?

I was recently talking to someone who claims milkshakes where originally made from ice cream and the milk ones are american spin-offs. However, going by the name I think it must have been made from milk originally. Can anyone help?

wikipedia says the original ones hjad whisky in and were made with icecream in since 1922!
