Do You Put Tins In The Fridge?

I invariably get moaned at for putting opened tins in the fridge, I have done it since a fridge first came into our home in the early 70s and suffered no consequence, I usually cover the tin with a lid or cling film but apparently is not enough. They even suggest it will damage the fridge.

They give me hell when I do it at work!!

it depends what is in the tin....I don't do it with pineapple as the fruit is acid and you can see when the can has been opened, the acid and the air start to oxidise the metal..a line actually forms between the metal that is under the juice which goes black, and the metal above the juice line which stays silver.
But tinned fish yes, tinned sweetcorn yes

PS I am not up to speed on current food elf an safety, Is it banned in the latest rules?

No never,always decant into airtight or at least covered receptacle,as the tin reacts badly with the food.

I have just completed the latest food hygiene course, to be honest I don't remember the issue being raised a all.

My mother puts them anywhere - the fridge, under the grill, in one of 15 cupboards, in the cork cupboard, under her bed, on the kitchen table chairs, you name it, you'll find them eventually - however her memory pills, there's another matter.

Haven't had them in the bathroom - yet.

The tins - mainly dog and cat food.

In the catering industry all opened tinned food should be decanted into a container that can be covered (with a lid or cling film) and that is washable and for the purpose. Lots of establishments buy containers especially for the purpose but a lot use old ice cream tubs and such like.

Only pet food. I just think...hey, they eat out of bins. Human food goes in plastic containers.

The food safety rules regarding storage of opened cans say there could be contamination of food by the can reacting with it causing all sorts of nasty stomach upsets.

Once a can is opened there's a theoretical risk that the oxidised interior (or oxidation of the solder that holds the can together) will leach into the product, leading to a possible health risk. That's why any café owner who put an opened can into the fridge would be marked down by food hygiene inspectors.

However most cans are now lined anyway (you'll often see a white strip over the solder), so the risk is actually very small. I haven't even got a fridge; I just put opened cans in the kitchen cupboard (for just 1 day in this weather or up to three in the winter) with clingfilm over the top. I've not dropped dead yet!

I hate to think what she could do with a can of Heinz baked beans........a chapter in my book will be titled 'The Kitchen Terrorist' to describe some of the subversion.

I gave her points for trying to put supper together last night. On the plate were, two tomatoes, uncooked brussels, spinach, uncooked macaroni, tiramisu (that needed chucking out and has been done), cornflakes, yoghurt, watercress, ryvita and old beetroot. Yum-yum.

vakayu - on that logic, the dog and cat should be long dead - having said that they are liver coloured and the only birds out in the garden are rooks and pheasants, so there may be some logic to your reasoning.

Only if Dog or Kat food - they dont seem to mind the spoiled taste.

I would put in a glazed bowl- virtually nothing interacts with that.
I see just about everyone else has moved into the tupperware age.
