Aldi

I subscribed to Which magazine about 6 months ago and they have always been banging on about how good Aldi is. As a regular Waitrose customer I took the plunge and went into Aldi. My god !!.... full of smack heads... wine/champagne absolute rubbish.. I shall be cancelling my Which subscription pronto !!! Does anyone feel the same way or do we still have to endure this crap from Germany (I think - actually I don't give a toss where its from) .

It's good for certain things, particularly fruit and veg, but I couldn't buy all my groceries there

I like certain of the items they stock and some have won awards - where one shops is a personal choice surely.

Aldi and Lidl may have shoppers that you wouldn't want to socialise with but many of their products are excellent and knock spots off high end retailers in taste tests.

I buy some stuff from there but wouldn't get it all from there - somethings are no cheaper than Asda plus Asda brings it to my house. I wouldn't shop in Waitrose as it's very expensive and doesn't stock all the things I want. But I suppose if you drink champagne on a regular basis you are not having to watch the pennies, so you can waste money that you needn't.

Just because you don't recognise the label, it doesn't mean that a product is inferior to something you recognise:

I rarely shop in Aldi (simply because there's not one that's particularly convenient for me) but it's big (and also German) rival, Lidl, sells some remarkably good wines.

Trouble is that its a fight to get into the car park here. Usually take a rucksack and fill it with veg and a few other items, using my bus pass. Leave the bulk for a visit to Sainsburys or Morrisons (which has brought down its prices to be more competitive.

I like Aldi, I agree you can't do a full shop there but what I do buy is IMO the best. For instance there petit pois are far superior to every other brand including Birds Eye. Almat there biological detergent gel really gets your whites white although I do admit you need to use more than what it says to use. I could go on....

The Aldi fruit and fibre breakfast cereal is much better than any other comparable product in my experience and really inexpensive. Their strawberry jam also good at very low price. You need to try some of their products.

I find Aldi very good for some of my shopping, my grandchildren love the cereal, the veg is very reasonably priced and fresh, they had some lovely food and treats at Christmas,
but as I say, each to their own.

I take exception to being called a smack head - I regularly shop in Aldi. The main problem with ours is that I' often unable to get into the car park.

Aldi don't mind if you want to use your Waitrose bags to put their stuff in so you can save and still impress the neighbours as you return to Shangri-La for an afternoon scoop while watching Countdown.

I only go to Aldi when himself is around, I can't park for toffee and the car park is always packed (with noticeably 'posher' cars then when I first started shopping there).

Reminds me of the time when I went out for lunch when I worked in Leeds City centre. I called into Yates's Wine Lodge shop for some cigarettes just as the assistant was bringing out a tray full of small samples of sherry. Suddenly I was surrounded by the great unwashed Tramps! men and women rushing in pushing me out of the way. They came out of the woodwork beelined for the Sherry. I checked myself over for the lice and took my hook out of there.
