Has Anyone Tried Making Sauerkraut?

I've got lots of white cabbage in the garden and would like to try making some Sauerkraut. I've downloaded a nice recipe from the Telegraph but am a bit concerned as I've read you can get Botulism from badly made Sauerkraut. Has anyone got a) a foolproof method and b) info on how to prevent killing yourself by eating it? Thanks!
