Just got another "Abba" in the microwave! Got the idea from AB a few weeks ago and it jolly well works! I will never cook swede in any other way. In case you missed it - put a whole swede just as it was bought, on a plate in the microwave on HIGH - don't pierce it or take top or tail off. Cook for approx 30 mins turning upside down halfway through cooking time. You will hear all kinds of hissing and humming as it cooks - hence the "singing" bit! Slice top off, scoop flesh out with an icecream scoop into a bowl, add butter, salt and black pepper and enjoy ! ummmmm - lovely. "The winner" takes it all! :)

I soften it up and mash it, butter and cracked black pepper and then add things like shallots and chilli pepper - my replacement to potatoes whilst on this minimum/(zero) carbs diet.....
I saw that here too, Ann and it's the best cooking tip ever.......I have passed it on to no end of people including anyone I see buying swede in a supermarket.....

Mind you.....asking a stranger....Do you know about singing swedes?.... gets some funny looks.......☺
What size is best? About as big as an orange, or smaller?
Bit bigger than that, Sandy - or cut the nuking time a little.
It is a brilliant idea though.

I've got a big one in the oven Sandy (sounds a bit risque!) x
Question Author
This one is bigger than the last one I cooked so I will probably add a bit more cooking time to 40 mins .....
It may well be lovely but that is consuming a stonking amount of electricity to cook!
No microwave here - the house would be blown up in three days if one was to arrive and be hooked up, the National Grid fused......
The original post on this topic suggested only 15 minutes.

Better to use half hour of lecky Eccles than to do yourself a mischief with carving knife on ceramic floor trying to prise the skin off the swede!
For the size of swede I cook I do twenty minutes...just the average swede.... nowhere near as long as boiling and it just tastes so much better...x

Got to go - my friend Bjorn is calling me from the kitchen! Going to enjoy with other veggies with a lovely lemon and garlic chicken crown from Sainsburys on special offer at moment £4 instead of £5 - and they are VERY tasty!
I adore it!!!!! So so tasty x
Peel it, (good sharp knife) dice it, and it needs no more than 15 -20 minutes in a pan. Then I run it through a mouli, one of my fav kitchen devices.....less than five to grind the swede into a good shred on the largest disk.
Who wants to peel and dice, DT...when you can sing it....and it does taste better.......☺
............and you have no pan or Mouli to wash.
and all your fingers.
Then there's the blood from the sharp knife all over the kitchen while you search for plasters.......x
I enjoy the feeling of using the knife on a head shaped vegetable - very therapeutic.......the washing up is a minor inconvenience.
