Are they worth it and do they taste good? I've seen kits that make 2.5 litres of spirits for around £20 which takes 2 weeks

Baldric, sod the holier then thou brigrade. If we want to get drunk then share our expertise with like minded seasoned drinkers then what's the problem?

I'll google at recipes that have a low risk of turning the house into a towering inferno.

"Operating a still is very dangerous, not just the risk of explosion but the deadly fumes. It creates a holy stink so unless you live in a middle of a field in a middle of a forest you are unlikely to get away with it."

Mate I want to brew a few social drinks not operate a breaking badesque crystal meth lab, hahah. Now that would be fun!
I brew all my own wine and have at least 300 litres stored. I use kits that make wine at around 13% and make my own beetroot, parsnip and damson wine that's 15%.

As has been said, you can't brew spirits, they are distilled. Even a small still can be lethal.
It is impossible to brew to more than around 14% alcohol. The reason is that the alcohol kills off the yeast when it reaches 14% and the fermentation stops.

Nice link divebudy but I stopped reading at "In a year's time"

We want to get drunk now not several years later when we probably have decided that we're sick of drinking alcohol and walking into dooshes living room filled with hanging marrows like something off an Alien movie, haha.
If you just want to get drunk now, I believe White Lightning is cheap and will do the trick. Especially if you top it up with methylated spirits.

Haha, I prefer to not live like a hobo
I used to brew the Prohibition packs in a demi john aaaaaages ago.
4.5 litres worked out at around £2 for a 700 ml bottle way back then :)

They're still for sale:

I've made coconut rum, apricot brandy, cherry brandy, whisky liqueur, orange liqueur, peach schnapps .... and poss a few others. They come out at approx 22% and I can vouch that they all taste quite nice ..... and get you quite tiddly lol :P
I used to brew homemade wine (before wine became cheap and more available)and belonged to a couple of online Homebrew groups. There was a quick recipe for 'turbo cider' that used apple juice that I never tried, you might look that up; it took a couple of weeks if I remember correctly. Home made can be quite nice, but it can also be pretty dreadful!
Not only can till be dangerous, the product can also be pretty nasty stuff - ever heard of people going blind drinking moonshine etc?
Sorry that should have read 'stills', not 'till'
