Pie, Mash, Liquor And Jellied Eels

Just watching a programme where a Pie & Mash shop was featured. My son walked in just when they were talking about the liquor so I missed what it's actually made of. Does anyone know?

And do you eat jellied eels? I've never tried them but my Nan used to love them.

ummmm, 'Pie Mash' is an East End dish. Liquor is not a 'sauce' - nothing so posh - the finished dish swims in it - and it definitely doesn't include anything as fancy as butter. It's poor man's fodder.

I know the liquor looks watery. I'd like to try it though. I know people queuing down the street isn't a true indication of quality though.

My mother lives in Wells-Next-The-Sea and there's a chip shop there where at lunch time the queue must go at least 200m down the street. We managed to get in early (love fish and chips by the sea) and it was nothing special. Not even as good as the Fish & Chip shop we have locally in Northampton......quite far from the sea!

As a small boy in the 50s it was my job to queue for the fish and chips every Saturday. I couldn't even see over the counter. The order was always the same; three fish and two bags of chips. Total cost? 14p.

Jack...I used to live next door to a chippy and remember having to tiptoe to order. It was only a bag of chips on a Saturday afternoon for us though.
