I didn't know that there was an actual dish called that but I have often just drizzled balsamic vinegar over strawberrys and really good vanilla ice cream, not too much but a little. It does taste surprisingly good (although the idea of it seems odd) it tastes really fruity and quite syrupy. Mmmmm...
Betty - I didn't know there was an actual recipe - until I saw one on the Delia Smith website recently. Although I'm going to try catkingirl's idea. Sounds wonderful!! Just a thought -there are so many different varietities of Balsamic vinegar, it might be an idea to start with a very mild one.

Well, I found out two ways, one from a Jamie Oliver cookbook, and one from a friend of a friend. They are both similar, but use different cheeses. You marinade the strawberries in balsamic vinegar and 4 tablespoons of castor sugar for two hours. Then whisk some more castor sugar into ricotta cheese until it tastes sweet enough. Ricotta goes on dessert plate, strawberries and vinegar drizzled over the top, mint leaf to finish. I made the dish and I think Cetti is right, the balsamic vinegar must have been too strong as the smell was overpowering. However, the end result was rather yummy, if a little sicky. Perhaps I need to finetune it.
Don't forget the ice cream though! Make sure its a good one - like haagen daz (sp?). I think I might try your recipe too - glad I could help : )
There was/is a great ice-cream that Tesco used to sell which was cardamom flavoured, which goes really well with balsamic strawberries. Also, they generally recommend that you use the best/most aged balsamic you can afford, as this is mellow and rich.
