long-lost recipes

It's a long shot I know, but I am desperately trying to replace some recipe books I lost in a house move.

They were Family Circle books published in 1970 or thereabouts, slim hardback A4 in black with a photo on the front. My Mum had the ones on Seafood, Cakes and Desserts, and Pies and Pastries.

I particularly NEED their recipes for Christmas Cake (the best one I've ever tried) and Danish Pastries, as life without these is just not the same!!

Have tried bookshops on the net, to no avail... I have a fear they may even have been an Australian printing.

There's a few family circle books in the food and drink section in books on e-bay, one is even from 1969, so you might strike lucky. If there's none on there today just keep on checking, I'm fairly sure you'll eventually find them.

You're correct that the Family Circle recipe books originate from Australia but they've been widely available in the UK for many years. (They're in softback format these days). The book 'Making Beautiful Cakes' was their most recent appropriate title (that I'm aware of) but, since this was published in February 1999 it could be hard to get hold of.

While 'Family Circle' publications have been available through bookshops, their principle method of distribution has been through supermarkets. (I know that Sainsbury's have stocked them - It could be worth checking your local store). Older editions frequently turn up in charity shops. (It would probably be hard to find a charity shop that hasn't got at least one or two of their titles!).

Of course, if the Family Circle recipe you require is their one for 'Neapolitan Christmas Cake' you need look no further than the Family Circle website:

(Just enter "christmas cake" in the search box - including the quote marks).

Entering "danish" into the search box brings up a recipe for "Cheese & Cherry Danishes". This recipe looks rather tasty!
