Popular But Discontinued.
31 Answers
Have you noticed that some very popular products in supermarkets seem to be discontinued for no apparent reason? The latest example I've seen was Wollemi Shiraz at Sainsburys, which according to the assistants was was so popular it was flying off the shelf. When I tried to order a few bottles online I was told, you've guessed it, it's been discontinued. Surely this practice can't be to promote their own brands, because, it be frank you could use Sainsburys own red wine to put on your chips.

Supermarkets will often discontinue products where they can't get enough stock to ensure a regular supply in their stores. That can result in a product which turns out to be more popular than expected having to be withdrawn from their range.
I've been recommending Asda's Chilean 'La Moneda' wines for years. (e.g. here: http:// www.the answerb ank.co. uk/Food -and-Dr ink/Que stion14 05447.h tml ) but after one of them was awarded the prize as 'Best Single Varietal Red under £15' at this year's Decanter World Wine Awards last month (despite costing only £5.75, or just £4.37 on a 'Roll Back' offer), I'm worried that they might cease stocking some of the range (especially the Malbec which took the prize) simply because they can't get hold of enough of the stuff.

I always used to buy "counter cooked jellied eels" from Tesco but they stopped selling them despite them being one of their biggest sellers on the fresh fish counter, so I went to the top and sent an email to the CEO I got an apology but not an explanation, but he sent me a £20 Tesco money card to make up for the disappointment
Happens all the time. It almost seems deliberate. Just off the top of my head I tended to occasionally buy the skinny cow ice lollies since they didn't break the diet. Now I consider myself lucky to find the mint flavour. Caramel is very rare, and none of the others are ever seen. I've forgotten how many things in the past have suddenly become unavailable.
Oh another has immediately even if I've forgotten the brand name. Used a particular hair shampoo for years. Unlike other brands it worked perfectly for me. It suddenly went. I wrote to the manufacturers who assured me it was still for sell and enclosed a list of shops in central London to go to !!!!! Never saw that brand again.
I had this problem start last year with Tesco, but I think for different reasons.
I always bought (lots) for years California choc covered sultanas, and quite a few different brands of food, wines etc.
I contacted the higher ups at Tesco, and was told (in so many words) that it was to do with the appointment of the new chairman of getting the company back on its feet, which I believe he has done, but I didnt get any vouchers :-(

Returning to the OP@s question, it is possible that the vineyard has stopped production of the wine for some unknown reason. Such things as retirement of the owners, new owner deciding to discontinue the wine, that years wine stock coming to an end, vineyard disease and innumerable other reasons could all also play a part.
I'd get in touch with Sainsburys or even the vineyard by email and ask. Perhaps the vineyard could direct you to other stockists - its very rare for just one retailer to have the exclusive rights to a given wine. They're usually sold under other labels too.

I totally agree with Haggis. I've lost count of the number if items I used to love from Asda and over the pasyt months they just disappear from the shelves, never to be returned ! The latest is their own brand of sour apple energy drink which I loved. Their usual excuse is 'no demand', despite the fact I bought several cans every week !!
