A recipe for a spicy beef and bean stew which I want to make today calls for black treacle, I don't have any.
I have golden syrup, maple syrup and dark brown sugar. Do you reckon any of these..maybe the dark brown sugar..would do as a substitute?
Thanks.

Dark brown sugar will have more depth of flavour.

Do you know what grade of maple syrup you have?

Do NOT use golden syrup, it will just sweeten without giving any flavour.

Oh er, I thought maple syrup was just maple syrup. Having looked at it, it says No.1 medium grade, so I've learnt something today. Does that make a difference Eccles, should/could I use some of that? Thanks.
Your maple syrup is quite a light one, I'd stick to the dark brown sugar.

Thanks Eccles, it's now bubbling away in the oven.
I think I'd have popped out to the shops. None near ?

Couldn't be bothered going out and it turned out very nice anyway, I'd be surprised if the treacle would have made much/any difference.
