Where (How Far) Is Your Nearest Butcher?
46 Answers
In a previous post of mine about Black Pudding, another AB'er said I should buy mine from a real butcher, and I had to point out that our nearest "real" butcher is 16 miles away.
Which leads me to ask, how far from you is your "real" butcher.I don't mean in a Supermarket (although some of those can be good) but a real family run, independent, butcher.
I fear that they are a vanishing breed, maybe doomed by supermarkets, mad cow disease and red meat consumption being discouraged.
Any thought?

A guy I know was working as a butcher in Asda and then moved to Morrison's where he immediately became a fishmonger. (I suppose it's possible that he could actually have trained as both but, knowing that he's 'not exactly the brightest button in the box', I tend to doubt it. Morrison's attitude seemed to be "you can sell meat so you can obviously sell fish")
Our small town (of around 5,000 people) has a mobile fishmonger's van here every Friday morning. There's also fresh fish available on market days in both of the larger towns nearby and (if you can afford his prices) there's a fishmonger at the Suffolk Food Hall (where nothing is ever cheap anyway):
