Proper Tea

Am I the only person left who only ever makes proper tea i.e. from loose tea leaves instead of horrid teabags? The only place for the latter is when in self-catering accommodation abroad and there's no tea-pot.

I'll use tea-bags for convenience, but at 4.00p.m. it is proper, leaf tea made in a teapot with a mesh filter which daughter bought us for Christmas. I find it makes a much better cup.

Sorry - I missed the chatterbank thread. Reason I asked question is that my branch of Waitrose has stopped selling its ordinary loose-leaf tea. When I asked why I received the usual "there's no call for it" reply. Blooming tea-bags - I hate them, plus the fact that the bags themselves aren't even biodegradable any more so don't compost.

A lot of the younger generation never drink tea, including my son and 21 year old granddaughter. They did however have it as toddlers, milky and warm from those little non - spill plastic mugs....I wonder if you did?

I have a teapot or two, but don't drink sufficient tea to buy the real McCoy. It's as much as I can do to finish a bag of teabags before they start to taste odd.

Rob...I only wish I could describe myself as of the "younger generation"!.....and no, I never did have any sort of tea when young - I remember refusing to go near it...even the smell (from a distance) is a no-no.

OH likes gunpowder green tea in his glass teapot with an inner filter, bags are for being away from home though he does have a couple of things that clip onto the side of a mug to make real tea.

My wife and I were discussing this because we take loose tea to friends abroad who similarly dislike teabags. She was in ASDA today and says they still have it under their own brand. Tesco probably also still have it. Additionally, "bespoke" coffee and tea shops, such as the one near us, definitely have it but at a significantly higher price. Finally, I know of a Pakistani owned shop (also fairly near us) which not long ago had quite large bags of loose black tea for sale (Indian owned shops quite possibly also) but I have not been there for a while.

I am a huge fan of Assam, Earl Grey and Lapsang Souchong.

I favoured leaf but cannot drink any tea currently.

Although I agree with the OP's sentiment faffing about with real tea when you're just making for one is a waste of money. I use teabags in a mug, but only Tetley's extra strong; I won't drink anything else.

When I am at home I always start the day with two mugs of Kenyan loose leaf tea from the pot. I went to a tea plantation in Sri Lanka and they showed us the different grades of tea. The large leaves went to the Middle East, the smaller leaves went to various places around the world and tea bags were filled with the dust that was left over.
