Originally it was a Czech beer - (Budwieser Budvar) - Then the Americans made a version (inferior in my opinion) that became famous

You can still buy the original Czech budvar and it is far nicer than the American imposter.

And you can visit the brewery at Ceske Budejovice. "Budweis" was the German spelling of the town's name when Bohemia was under German rule, hence Budweiser, the adjective from the town's name. That appalling stuff produced in St Louis is only so-called because some opportunist was able to buy the right to use the name and apply it to their gnat's pee that passes for beer. As you may be able to tell, I do prefer the original...........
