My mum always called bread toasted on one side only ‘French toast’, yet Googling the term throws up a concoction of eggs, vanilla, etc, and bread.

Did my mum get it wrong, or did the English have their own cut-down version of French toast.

Actually 'pain perdu', which is 'lost' bread, literal translation.

Take it it's because the bread is 'lost' as bread, but can be 'found' again as an edible by (in that case) toasting it etc.
If you make French toast à l’anglaise, ie toasting one side only, which side do you butter, toasted or untoasted?
