I tend to use the high setting on my microwave for all things, time, unless I am defrosting. But the new microwave bought this week has very small gaps on the dial and I cannot judge half a minute easily. Can I use lower setting for longer time and acheive same result?

Yes, half power for twice as long. It's not like a conventional oven where you need temperature, it's the amount of energy you supply that counts.
Why didn't you get a digital one ?
Are there no marks in between the gaps for 30secs.?
If not then try moving the pointer to the number of minutes above what you actually want and then turn it back to approx. halfway. You won't be far out .

Fear of change drew me to the one with a dial, only to find once home, that the gap between the minutes is minute. I might try half power for twice as long on the short items. I can judge 5 minutes, but have no chance if anything more accurate such as one and a half.
