I've got a Breville Halo which cooks by a combination of hot air and infrared (or you can just choose infrared). it cooks excellent chips, and sautees in between 15-25 minutes (depending on the type of potato, whether or not you parboil them, how brown you like them, and how many you are cooking). When you first get one, you need to experiment a bit (I put more oil than they recommend - but we are still talking less than a tablespoonful). The main advantages are minimal smell, minimal mess, easy to clean (just wipe it out), and the fact that I can put it on for 15 minutes, go and do something else, and then just turn it on again while I prepare or cook something to go with the chips. I, like me, you live alone, it's an absolute boon (though it doesn't compare to the chips my late wife used to cook).
