I have a packet of unopened ham from Tesco. The "use by" date is 9th Jan. As it's unopened, would you risk it?
Just opened it....it smells and looks fine.

No. Use by is not best before. The 9th is quite a while ago.
No way!. 3 weeks over the date? I wouldnt chance it, but were all different...
I wouldn't either
No, in fact that old I wouldn't even give it to the cats.
If it doesn't smell bad and looks OK, eat it I often eat things past their so called sell by or use by dates
Unopened in airtight pack I trust, presumably kept in fridge, looks & smells ok. Wouldn't worry me. Appreciate it's well over, so try 1 piece first, see how it tastes.

Thank you everyone. Had a bit of a dodgy stomach last week so i threw the ham.
Good call, Hammerman.
You can see how women live longer than men, anyway ;-)
From the Food Standards Agency

"Use-by dates are about safety

A use-by date on food is about safety. This is the most important date to remember.
Foods can be eaten until the use-by date but not after. You will see use-by dates on food that goes off quickly, such as meat products or ready-to-eat salads.

For the use-by date to be a valid guide, you must carefully follow storage instructions. For example, if the instructions on the packaging tell you to refrigerate after opening, you should keep the food in a fridge at 5°C or below.

Find out more about chilling your food correctly.

After the use-by date, don't eat it, cook it or freeze it. The food could be unsafe to eat or drink, even if it has been stored correctly and looks and smells fine. A lot of foods, including meat and milk, can be frozen before the use-by date though so plan ahead."

I'd risk giving it to the birds.
I'd give it to Tilly. She eats some disgusting things when out and about, unless I get to her first.
When we used to buy our meat from the butcher we only had smell to go by.
Any meat, chicken etc smelling a bit iffy goes out on my drying green at night. Not quite sure who eats it, could be local cats or my urban fox, but its always gone in the morning.
Maggie don't know what eats the crust from the bread I throw out every morning
Rats probably.

No. Even I wouldn't feed that to Mr BM.
Yes BM they live in neighbours log pile
If things look and smell OK I eat them, whatever the "use by" date says.
Looking ‘wrong’ or smelling ‘wrong’ is not a guide to whether or not food is safe to eat. If in doubt chuck it out!
Naomi - sorry but that mentality is the reason that so much perfectly edible food is wasted in this country.
