I've got a frozen 11 kilo gammon. How long do you reckon it will take to thaw out in a fridge?
I'm getting conflicting advice on the web.

Thanks

It's just gone in the fridge, and is a smidge shy of fitting in my largest roasting tin. Thawed joints shrink a bit, don't they?

On Thursday, I'll be asking "how long does it take to cook an 11 Kilo gammon" ;)

I'll give it long and slow, overnight on Friday.

Tiggs, turkey's have a cavity, so I think they thaw a bit quicker, this is a solid lump of meat.

Thanks all
Tambo...your suggestions could lead to a few upset stomachs...to put it mildly.
Refrigerator...now.
You could start it off in a bucket of COLD water kept in the coolest place you've got.
You could also try cutting it in half when it starts to thaw.

Thanks Pasta
It's tucked up nicely in the fridge, and I'm just going to ignore it til about Wednesday.
11 Kg ! Wow you must have a huge freezer! I would cook it from frozen on 'Slow' but allow at least 12 hours ! Even 24 hours on Slow is not going to be too long !

I would never, ever cook a joint of that size from frozen.
^^but you could....if you use exclamation marks at the end of every sentence>
Never tried it myself but what about putting it on a very very low heat in the oven just for defrosting? Or would that start cooking it?
Question Author
Since I don't need to cook it until Friday night, I think I have enough time (hopefully), to not have to use speeding up methods.

I'm also terrified of giving everyone food poisoning.
When's the party, Rocky? Have you got time to sample some of the gammon before you dish it out?

Saturday, Tilly. I'll stick it in the oven on Friday before I go to bed, and give it about 9-10 hours on 150c, at least that way, if it's still not cooked, I've got time to finish it.
What else are you serving?
I have a frozen shoulder - when do you think that will defrost?
Defrost over 3/4 days and then cut in half to make it easier to cook and carve.
Follow eddies advice and you will need lots of toilet roll for all the upset stomachs!!
Oh and is 3pm too early for me to turn up?
Rockrose, can you pick me up on the way please?
I sawed a large frozen gammon joint with a large hacksaw! Worked well :)
btw - it was a brand new hacksaw.
Absolutely Tilly do you think the dogs would be welcome too
Well, RR, that leftover gammon will need to be eaten. I'm sure your dogs could help.
My way of thinking tilly
