I treat them exactly as normal spuds.

Boil/steam them then mash them.
Roast them
Boil/stem and eat.

I prefer to roast them with peppers, parsnips, red onion and other seasonal veg.

fry in thin slices, mmm mmm
Try them as jacket potatoes but they don't take quite as long as white potatoes.
Are they actually sweet potatoes or yams? At any rate, they are a staple of Thanksgiving dinner here in the U.S. Sweet Potatoes are hard to find so yams are usually substituted. We cut them into thick slices, place them in a baking dish, place a covering of brown sugar and quite a lot of butter on them and bake at 350 degrees F until done... not overdone. Oh... almost forgot, on top of the butter and brown sugar we place marshmallows. Cook uncovered the last 15 minutes or so to brown the marshmallows...
Ooooh stop it you lot ! I love sweet potatoes. In their jackets with plenty of butter and black pepper.Or chopped into chunks and roasted in the oven with other winter veg ....with olive oil, garlic and rosemary. Scrummy.Mashed with olive oil and garlic is nice too.
I shall be turning up at Clanads any day now......!

Thanks to all, each sounds great, will try all

cook like normal potatoes.then mash with butter and top with sesame seeds

Cut them in half then slit them in a criss cross fashion, stick them in the over for about 30-40 minutes until they start to colour on the edges.

Then when they are nearly done melt a fair amount of butter in a pan, add Jamaican Jerk seasoning to the butter then spoon over the sweet potatoes.

cut them into very thin strips using a cheese slice, then deep fry them to make your own crisps. Sensational. Also try carrot, parsnip (just SO good), beetroot and of course, your normal spud. Once cooked (seconds) drain on kitchen paper then sprinkle with sea salt or chilli flakes or ground black pepper or paprika. Mhmmmmmmmm
Yeah, chip option is good. Not a big fan of the taste otherwise. Prefer butternut squash for that kind of thing.
I think sweet potatoes are easily found..Asda have them for a start!
I tend to use them most in mash..mixed with normal potatoes. Nice in a swede and carrot mash too.
They are a very good first food too. Potatoes are related to deadly knightshade so not a great idea for babies. Sweet potatoes are unrelated and fine.
Yep Asda sell them. I've never had them to be honest but all these ideas on here are seriously tempting me to get them.

I particularly like the idea of the one with jerk seasoning.

Oh and butternut squash..... deeeeeeeeeeelicious. You can just about do anything with that, that you can do with potatoes too. I like soup with that, a couple of carrots, an onion and veg. stock, boil till veggies are tender and then blend with a small quantity of milk. Bet you could do something similar with sweet pots - make some kind of soup/broth!

Let us know what you try/come up with!!
Peeled and diced in a vegetable curry. Fan-blooming-tastic

Sweet potatoes make a great casserole dish. They're usually mixed with butter and sugar, and topped with either marshmallows or a combo of brown sugar and pecans. I just made this one yesterday:

www.allrecipes.com or www.bhg.com both have some good recipes for sweet potatoes. Good luck!!!

they are a recent thing for me too, but I use them at leadt twice a week now just where i would have used normal potatoes. I do half white and half sweet potatoe mash on top of cottage pie. Kids like em anyway.

Cut 'em into chip shaped chunks, put on a baking tray, cover with virgin olive oil and LOADS of salt and pepper, then bake in the oven for 20 mins or so at 200 degrees C. Serve with a pan-fried chicken breast and chunky coleslaw. DELICIOUS!!!!
