This year I thought I might make some real meat mince pies like our ancestors made for many centuries until just the suet was left as the meat element in mince meat. I have found plenty of recipes on the net for them but as a point of interest, has anyone ever seen them for sale or have a tried & tested favourite recipe. Many thanks x

I don't mean to be a philistine, but I don't think meat would go with custard....

Just Joking! In answer, I haven't ever seen or tasted this type of pie, but would be interested also in finding out. I'm quite fascinated by the 'olden days'!!!

One website that has some good 'olde worlde' Christmas recipes is the National Trust's in their Christmas link!
Aren't those disgusting 'Scotch Pies' made from suet paste and minced beef/lamb.
Question Author
No they are not quite scotch pies, as they have all the same sort of spices and fruit in like the mince pies we know now together with real meat, usually minced beef or lamb although I think they used to use tongue as well. No wonder people drink more at Christmas!
