I tip postman at Xmas for giving me good service all year round, I tip my gardener about October ( last cut) for same, I always tip my hairdresser every time I go
Why? Because I appreciate the service they provide me

I guess the answer to the OP is its a personal choice and one should never feel guilty if you don't. Its not about the cost of the meal either, I've tipped servers in a greasy spoon but not in a high class establishment -and moreover vice versa . I don't tip normally but will if the server has gone out of their way to help. I will NOT pay a set service charge.

//Out of curiosity, I googled food server salaries in the US...
As low as $2 per hour. Speechless.//
This is what they use to justify blackmailing people into leaving tips rather than sorting out their employment rules and charging an appropriate amount instead of conning customers.
I recall a post by an American on another site who said he left 20% for good service, 15% for OK service but if the service was poor he only left 10%! That'll teach them to be better at their job, still getting 10%.
We go to the US a lot and always tip but would rather pay an honest amount for the service and reward above and beyond service.
