faster than white bread. I have been buying Hovis wholemeal brown
bread and noticed that the slices have this white type powder
round the crusts. Is that off or should it be like that...
this is bread that might be 3 days old but not been opened...

^Many commercial breads smell of vinegar (nothing to do with mould)....because acetic acid is added to the mix as a preservative.

It's OK emmie. I keep my bread in the fridge.
It it's powdery it's

i haven't any space in the fridge, its full.
Sorry, probably the start of mould. Strangely enough I get the Weight Watchers wholemeal and that keeps better than anything else I've bought. Not bad bread either. One thing you could do is keep half out for using straight away and freeze the rest. It's hard to get through a whole loaf before it goes mouldy if you are on your own.
Quite right rowan. That's what I do. However, it could end up as bread and butter pudding!

its white powdery, i cut those bits off, but still don't know if the bread is on the turn...

i have one loaf in the freezer and will use that when needed, i will take out a few slices each day, its just that i have noticed that this fresh bread doesn't last long, unlike the white bread.
It probably is, bread mould isn't one to be eaten. Sometimes I just buy a pack of wholemeal rolls, they can be sliced and toasted, and it means I start from smaller quantity of bread
Question Author
i might do that next time. I switched from white bread to brown wholemeal as i thought it might improve my diet.....
The "white powder " is almost certainly flour, not mould! BTW - bread goes stale quicker in the fridge.
Question Author
will use up what i have and then only have what's in the freezer.....
It is flour and nothing to worry about. Mould had s vinegary smell

Mould smells like... er... mould. I'm sure it's flour, Emmie
