I mean the grill found in gas and electric cookers that you put food under, not the contact type grills.
I'm wondering when people first started cooking food under a grill. Surely it would have been impossible before we had the gas and electric cooker. Who first thought of it and how did it catch on?

Barry, that's like asking who it was who first witnessed an Hen laying eggs and thought, mmmmmm.
Is it far different from something rotating on a spit over a fire?
Food would be grilled over hot coals. Not much different from a barbecue.

Yes, food has always been grilled over heat but I'm asking about grilling under the flame or element. Very different to rotating over a fire.
It was invented in the 18th century by a man who was sick of ash in his cheese on toast.
