They provide protein in easily digestible form if you can't or don't fancy eating . Athletes also drink them to supplement the high amounts of protein they need to build muscle.
they give you protein in a drink
I think the basic purpose is to add more protein to your diet. Often used by those who train or want to add muscle. Also used to add nutrition to the diet for the elderly or those who want to gain weight. There are many types on the market and they are made and marketed according to which group they are developed for.

Chris - your link provided me with the answer. It was yesterday when I was at a supermarket I saw a heavyish lad drinking one from a carton and couldn't down it quick enough to drink another one.

I thought it was maybe an energy drink but maybe he was drinking to try and lose weight.
Jenny, a young lad would drink it because he believes it makes his muscles bigger or helps him to train for longer. People who exercise hard are advised to consume protein within 30 minutes of stopping the exercise to help repair muscle.

Protein is an important part of our diet and key to building and maintaining all types of body tissue, including muscle.

It contains amino acids, the building blocks used for muscle growth.

Protein powders, available as shakes, bars and capsules, are one of the most popular muscle-building supplements.

They're legally available to buy over-the-counter as well as online.

They're marketed as helping to promote your body's muscle growth, aid metabolism (helping with weight loss), help you reach peak physical performance, boost energy and fight the ageing process.
I drink them as a meal supplement
Your circumstances aren't typical, redhelen. I doubt you could eat a 16oz t bone steak with mushrooms and peas :D
Lol nope 150g of steak with a touch of Mayo and maybe 1 chip
Nothing
do food instead
it is better for you

Even if you are weight lifting which I know you are not, they are not better and can be seen to be inferior to a grilled stake
BA for red H

In order to get the amino acid content in these rip offs up, they add a dimple pretty useless amino acid called glycine
( glycine packing )
This is why steak is better for you
// grilled stake//

you won't get splinters from a protein drink though lol!
// People who exercise hard are advised to consume protein within 30 minutes of stopping the exercise to help repair muscle.//

spotted the non sequitur ?

There isnt any damage to repair

The heavyish lad who was downing it, was trying to look like Kanye West - you do this with repetition of lightish weights many times ( in a gym) ( so called sets)
The really heavy lifters, road labourers, who are really strong er dont look like Kanye West.

at our age we all look awful and should be thinking about health and not looking like Daniel Craig - who I admit was looking his age today on tee-vee
erm thank you: steak
Drinking proteins shakes and other substances is good for health But eating of dry fruits effect more than drinking these kind of proteins.
