Hi,

My husband has decided that after 35 years as a meat eater he is going to become a vegetarian as of the new year - on ethical grounds, he feels that he can't go on being a hypocrite and going on about the mistreatment of animals while continuing to eat meat!...does anyone have any good recipies that I could try?

He has also promised not to object to me and our son eating meat but feels that he doesn't want to any more - while I agree with his points and support his decision - its going to be a right pain!

ps he's not really keen on Quorn.

pps I give it 1 month max before he's desperate for a bacon sarnie!!!

I forgot to add that he also has a nut allergy, so lots of the traditional veggie things like nut roast are out!

Check out the Vegetarian Society website for information and recipes.

Good on your husband both for choosing to be veggie and for not objecting to you eating meat: there are too many veggies who think they have to be evangelical about their beliefs and, frankly, they're a pain in the butt.

I've been a veggie for 28 years, have never been tempted by a bacon sarnie and have thrived on the diet. I'm not a big nut eater either so it's not all nut roast at mine. I occasionally eat Quorn - about two or three times a year, but I could do without it.

As Ursula says, the Vegetarian Society is a mine of helpful information (I'd particularly recommend The Vegetarian Handbook); there are also a great many veggie cookbooks these days. Rose Elliot's books are good and I love my Madhur Jaffrey's Eastern Vegetarian Cooking but find the author you're happiest with.

There are plenty of good veggie websites too. Here's one that I use http://ashycook.topcities.com/index.htm but I'm sure you'll find others.

Good luck - maybe you'll be joining him in a year's time :-)
My son is a vegetarian and I found it difficult to find things for him to eat at first but now there are loads of things you can get.Asda do veggie burgers, sausages, pies etc. They have a good selection. Plus most things that I cook for us are easy to adapt.Sunday lunch for example ..he has all the veg and yorkshires but I just make a jug of veggie gravy for him and do him veggie sausages with it. I make him pasta salad with mixed veg, cauliflower cheese, veggie chili, broccoli bake, vegetable soup, macaroni cheese, veggie lasagne, roasted veggies...the list is endless ! He is quite happy for us to have meat but I have to admit we don't eat as much meat as we used to before he decided to become a vegetarian.

Don't know if he likes a drink now and again, but you may like to read this

I'm not a vegetarian but do enjoy lots of vegetarian recipes and can recommend the following two books:

Rose Elliott - The vegetarian kitchen

Roz Denny - The ultimate vegetarian cookbook

Buy him one of these as a Christmas present and encourage him to cook his own meals. This may test out how committed he's going to be, especially when all that delicious bacon is cooking under the grill !

If he is keen on Indian food get a good Indian veggie cookbook. Indian food is veggie-friendly and uses lots of pulses which is good for protein. Italian food is also good and I can usually find lots of recipes I like in Italian cookbooks.

I would definitely recommend Rose Elliott.

For a very amusing insight into vegetarianism and to help your husband enjoy his nug roast on Christmas Day with a clear conscience, tell him to visit the following website.

Re the above link - make sure you turn the sound up on your computer first !
