Thanks Harley. Prompt response and a big help.
Sorry Harley, The answer is Minstrals
It's M'n'Ms isnt it???
I immediately thought of Treets, but then Minstrels got me worried - perhaps Minstrels took over from Treets - they always seem to be renaming sweets!
It's definitely Treats. M & M's may have taken over the style of Treats, but the original confection was advertised with a TV campaign in which a lady wearing white gloves handled a Treat, and then showed her unblemished glove to the camera. Am I embarassed to remember a B&W TV ad in such detail? Believe it!

Yeah no two ways about it. it was minstrels "with the crunchy shell and the smooth chocolate inside"

definitely minstrels. no shadow of a doubt.
Ive done a poll of people I know. 10% Minstrels----90% Treets.

Definitely not Minstrels. They weren't around at the time. However I think Mars may own the slogan and M&Ms were advertised with it in the US - they were not around in the UK then either. I believe it was Treets, and I remember different types - Chocolate (which may now be Minstrels), Toffee and Peanut.
it was minstrels, not treets
I think most of you are frankly too young. The answer is certainly TREETS. M&M's with their disgusting colourings etc were not around. You correspondant who speaks of the white gloves speaks the truth
Rasarbox is right on two counts -firstly it certainly was Treets and secondly most of you are clearly too young to remember. It was a '60s thing, so unless you are close to 40 you won't remember. In those days in the distant past, you youngsters, M&Ms and Minstrels didn't exist. (But there were still dinosaurs.)
M&Ms -In the U.S., at least.
minstrels!
it was mintrals and what ever happened to banjo's
