I understand that if glassess are touched together during a toast then it is said a sailor will die. Does anyone know where this idea came from and what it means?

Complete guess, but could it be if sailors had bad weather while at sea, glasses would clash together and due to the bad waves, a sailer would be tossed over the side of the boat never to be seen again?

I have always toasted with glasses touching, as long as I can reach the other glass.
