As per Postman Pat:

"One of the most frequently used of our postal services, First Class mail is ideal if you want your letter or packet to be delivered the next working day, including Saturday. It costs just 30p for letters and small items weighing up to 60g."

Don't forget Sundays no mail is posted and if its posted late its less likley to get there next day. Check out the Royal Mail website for more info.

Royal Mail quote one to two working days for 1st class mail but I wouldn't bank on it. If the letter is very important I would opt for special delivery which is guaranteed to be delivered by a specific time next working day.
Remember to take into consideration how carp Royal Mail are at Christmas!
According to the Post Office website, today (20/12) was the last day to post mail for delivery before Christmas. However, they added that to ensure delivery you should post earlier. What a load of crap from a crap organisation.
