Fibrous Garic Cloves

Just curious.
In the past both garlic I've grown and garlic I've bought has been crushable. However garlic bought from 2 different supermarkets recently have proved very reluctant to pass through the garlic press; and looking at the remains it seems to be fibrous sheets of garlic that just block the holes.
Any idea what causes that and/or why ?
(In any case my woman gave up on the crushing and resorted to slicing, which while nice wasn't quite the same.)

Thanks for the response. A little confused as those I've grown have occasionally shown a slight green bit in, and have never proved an issue. Maybe I just got lucky. No sign of green in the bought ones but they have this issue. Never noticed it before. Perhaps some varieties are more susceptible than others ?
