Does anyone know if there was a bacon flavour salt n shake packet of crisps by Smiths (I think). You know the ones with the little blue envelopes of salt in them. I'm sure there was but no one else can remember. Anyone know?

Smiths crisps made the plain crisps with the little salt bag up until they merged with Walkers in 1979. Trials were done with flavour and shake products in the '80s but nothing came of them. I remember when salt and vinegar crisps first came out, this seemed the height of exotic food in those days.

So bacon flavour could have been possible then. I remember I was young when I found them, so it could have been in the '80s.

My hubby and I also remember them from the '80s.

I'm sure there were other flavours than salt or salt n vinegar, but can't remember which... Pretty sure there was a cheese & onion, and bacon seems a strong candidate.

Know I was gutted when they stopped production, and then miffed when they restarted with only salt!

Thanks all. I'm still sure there was a bacon flavour - I remember it, and after all these years wish it were still manufactured.

i'm sure your right, now you mention it i do remember bacon flavour.. maybe you could contact Smiths??
I grew up in a pub and browsed my way through plenty of the stock. Unless it was a very short trial, I don't remember any other salt and shake packets except the plain crisps. Originally the salt came in a little twist of blue wax paper if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I will have to try and contact Smiths and ask them, because it's beginning to bug me now. Stupid fool!!

prohibited i found this for you

The nature of marketing new products is that regional testing can lead to certain items never reaching the greater mass of the public. Evidence seems to indicate that there may have been experimentation with a 'Flavour 'n' Shake' product in the 1980s; but the test release failed to show positive responses and the product was dropped. It seems likely that because the manufacturer was based in Leicestershire, UK, the experimental product never saw the light of day outside of the Midlands region.

I never lived in the midlands.. so i am now thinking that maybe for a short space of time there was a company that copied the salt and shake style crisps for a while.. i also seem to remember them coming in a 6 pack with salt and vinegar too...my nan is round tomorrow i will ask her for you and she has a fantastic memory for crap like this.. and she used to be the one that bought the food in our house.. so she must've bought them at some point!!

Opps i see someone gave that link already..

I have never lived there either, I live in Cambridgeshire, but I'm pretty sure it was a Salt n Shake bag that I had, am certain it had the little wax salt envelope. Although I don't actually remember any salt and vinegar flavour. Maybe, like you said, it was another company using the same kind of idea.
