I Wonder Why This Number Is Rising So...

According to the TV advert(where people are dressed as vegetables).
A family wastes 60lb's of veggies a month.
Where can I verify this,as it does seem extreme.
Being brought up at the tail end of WWII rationing(I was born in 1947)
I hate to waste food, and don't,even though I am now a single household..
Any thoughts?
Chuck in some other veg you happen to have in Tilly, a couple of carrots, a potato, an onion or two, maybe a pepper, a tin of chopped tomatoes, a veg stock thing, throw in some pasta, maybe a tin of any kind of beans on your cupboard, anything to hand. Add some dried mixed herbs or a few chilli flakes, et voila! A tasty hearty soup..eat some, freeze some. Nothing wasted.
We too have very few food/veg 'leftovers' (I'm also a product of post-war cookery). Anything we have goes into the brown 'caddy' and biodegradable bags provided by the very advanced E. Yorkshire waste management. They are so efficient that every autumn/winter there are local collection points where you can collect a bag of compost, made from your leftovers, on production of your card for the dechetterie ( sorry Eng. word has temporarily deserted me).
I'm truly appalled about how much modern families waste.
You're welcome, Tilly, go for it and let me know how yours turns out.
None of my soups ever turn out the same as I taste and add things like tomato purée, balsamic vinegar or Worcestershire sauce or leftover gravy as I go along. The only thing I'm not keen on adding is broccoli, much as I love broccoli I don't like it in a mixed veg type soup. And cheese. We add a bit of grated cheese once it's in our bowls if we fancy it.
