When Was The Last Time You Ate Faggots?

We are having them for dinner today, made by our butcher.  Probably the last until autumn.

I remember Mr Brains faggots advertised a lot on the TV years ago, always thought the name unfortunate.  We tried them once but weren't keen.  Not a patch on proper butchers faggots.

Do they still advertise?

I'm pleased some of us still enjoy them.

Can anyone jog my memory?  Those large tins of ham in a sort of triangular tin that was considered a treat for many households - was it Ye Olde York ham?

He Old Oak Ham. A Christmas treat for the season.

Thanks, david.  I was never that keen, much preferred the butcher's ham, thick cut on his slicer

I don't mind faggots at all. I think Brains were trying to copy a meat product known to us in Ancoats as savoury duck. This was on sale at the UCP shop and had to be cooked, unlike faggots, which have to be warmed up. Savoury duck was very, very tasty and I wish I could buy it now.

I'm not a lover of tinned ham although there always seemed to be a tin of Spam in my childhood home.

Tinned ham is usually salty and tastes fake.

Usually, I buy a gammon joint, soak it overnight to get rid of some of the salt, then put it in the slow cooker.

10cs, although I'm Manchester born and bred, I didn't have savoury duck until I visited the home of my brother's future wife who lived in Derbyshire.

It was funny really as first of all I had to get used to people calling me 'duck' but when she asked me, ' Does thou like savoury duck, duck?' I was completely lost for words.

Barsel, savoury duck was very, very tasty. It really was. My mother used to buy it from the UCP shop on Butler Street, or if they didn't have it, the UCP shop on Rochdale Road at the top of Livesey Street. Happy Days!

My Mum used to buy tripe from the UCP shop and other 'offal' stuff. Yuck.

10C, savoury ducks are very similar to faggots but faggots have been around long before Brains version.  The faggots I buy need cooking, not just reheating although the butcher sells both.

Where I live it is traditional to eat them with grae pays (maple peas).

Barsel, I do the same these days except I pressure cook the gammon joint in fruit juice

Tripe and onions! That was a regular for us, too, along with pigs feet which we ate after our Sunday night bath

I haven't had a first time yet.

//I remember Mr Brains faggots advertised a lot on the TV years ago, always thought the name unfortunate.//

I've eaten real brains ....

Haven't eaten them for over 30 years. Used to buy Mr.Brains faggots then. Wouldn't eat them now! My mother used to make her own occasionally, they were nice. If I ate any now, I know I'd get terrible indigestion.

I like the Mr Bains frozen ones just had a look but none this time in monthly shop so a few weeks ago. I did notice though I do Have Birdseye beef burgers 'with added plant protein' (On A different thread) I often make my own Burgers as well as buy Tesco ones... maybe a sustitution I didn't notice.

Me too, Naomi.

Isn't it amazing what we can shove over our necks when money's tight?

I remember my nan trying to makeme and my brothers eat Brain's Faggots. They were vile. Never had butchers ones

I think it was more due to the war than being penniless.  Offal wasn't rationed

I am pleased and proud to say that I have never eaten a faggot.
