Following the post about Jersey royal potatoes, I feel the same about eggs, even free range eggs bought from a farm, they don't seem to be as tasty as I remember, or is it my age?

I suspect that it is because animals used to be fed a lot of scraps and odds and ends, things move on and there are a lot more restrictions in place.

Jersey royal potatoes are suffering due to the excessive rainfall this year.

I find them tasteless as well - even the ones with nice dark yolks that look appetising.  The last time I had scrambled egg that had any flavour was in Florida a few years ago when my friend added extra yolks to them.  I tried doing the same back in the UK but they were still tasteless.

You probably need to add more salt. Lots of things don't seem a patch of the quality we had years ago.

It makes me laugh when people comment on how good the eggs must be because of the colour of the yolk. Additives are often added to the feed purposefully to give a deep orange yolk.  It's not harmful but does not make a better egg.

I haven't noticed lack of flavour in the eggs I buy at home but did notice thin, watery whites the last time I bought them on holiday.

Perhaps try frying them in beef dripping

I was given half a dozen last week by a neighbour who brought them back from dahn saff, she was telling me how cossetted the chickens in her daughter's garden were.

Bright yellow yolks, bluish shells, no additives, quite tasty and no laughs.

Mablethorpe, if it matters.

dave50  A friend has space in her garden and has 4 'rescue' hens.  They are all ex-battery (one has a leg sticking out at right-angles) and they are all currently living in 'hen heaven'. Grain is provided, but otherwise they have scraps and free range over quite a chunk of garden.

Friend lets out a Holiday Cottage next door, which takes most of the eggs, but she herself doesn't eat eggs - which is where I am fortunate. Those odd-sized eggs from happy little, deformed, chickens are delicious. I wish I could get them every week.  :)
