I know they are both brandy drinks from France but would like to know the difference between the two. And is armanag a before or after dinner drink?

Scroll down the page to French brandies

They are made in different places from different grape varieties.

Some people prefer Cognac, some Armagnac, like some prefer Scotch whisky while others prefer Irish. Its entirely a matter of taste.

I prefer Armagnac as it sems to have more flavour and be a little 'rougher' than Cognac.

Many thanks to both of you. Great help.
Cognac, from Charente, is double distilled and Armagnac from the Gers is single distilles in a still called an alambic.
Both Cognac and Armagnac can be drank on ice as an apritif or as a digestif after a meal.
