I can make a fantastic yorkshire pudding using plain white flour but I would like to know if it is possible to make a successful one using plain wholemeal flour? Has anyone tried it and if so what were the results?

Thanks, Kath.

My instinct tells me that using wholemeal flour might make the pud v. heavy and stodgy - look at the difference between white and wholemeal bread! However, you might get a result (of sorts) with half white and half wholemeal - (most wholemeal bread recipes call for this proportion), and you'd probably have to tinker with the liquid proportions as well - wholemeal flour absorbs liquid like a sponge. If it were me, I'd just stick to the unhealthy white flour version - why fix it if it ain't broke?

Thanks Kim, I agree with you about it being stodgy using all wholemeal flour so I am going to try it using half and half, but I will give it a try using only wholemeal as well, if it doesn't work out it wont have cost me much.

Don't use whoelmeal, the pudding will be 'gritty' or tough. Just use plain white.

nickmo, have you tried it or do you know someone who has. I am still going to try it. It wont have cost much if it dosen't work. I like experimenting.

Kitty - Been tried to see if would be as 'wrong' as I thought. And it was.

You can add herbs to the batter for if you want to be different - thats nice with a Toad in the Hole (or Frog in the Mud if it all goes wrong!) and only use sparingly or you have a green mess to explain away.........

And use rice flour if any friends are allergic to wheat.

Happy battering!

Thanks again nickmo, I will try making yorkshires with rice flour and maybe just try making them with half wholemeal and half white as Kim suggests.
If you don't use plain white flour then it is not Yorkshire pudding. There is nothing unhealthy about white flour.
Unfortunately Gef White/Plain flour is a main cause of Fatty Liver Disease. Hence I was on this forum hoping to find out whether it was worth my while attempting to make using Wholemeal flour.
