Is there a statutory duty on manufacturers to label their foodstuffs accurately ? There is surely a strong incentive to cheat on calorie labelling

I would imagine they'd be breaking the Trade descriptions Act by stating something that was untrue.

IF they announce the calorific content (which isn't required unless they make a claim about the food i.e. low calorie) then yes it must be accurate and it will be tested by the manufacturer and then at some point by a Public Analyst for your local Env Health/Trading Stds.
