pie mash ' liquor & eels

Do these pie and mash shops exist outside London?The dish consists of a mince pie ,basic mash,and a parsley sauce ,[cooked with the eel juice I think],as an option you also have stewed eels.These are cut into 1'' pieces and float in the liquor.It should be served with plenty of salt 'pepper and vinigar,[the one I used to go to in Earlsfield South London , used to put small chillies in the vinigar,,sadly this resteraunt is now closed down,although not too far away there is a very old established one in Tooting Broadway..You probably think the whole thing sounds disscusting,but I can assure you it tastes delicious!

I was brought up in Dagenham, and whenever I go back, Becontree Heath is a must, 'Heaths Pie & Mash Shop', you won't get better anywhere, although they've just opened one up in Basildon, so i've got to give it a try sometime.

Don't know about outside London but if you're looking for one in South London then Goddards are gods and they do chilli vinegar! One at the Cutty Sark and one in Deptford - I'm hungry now!!

Seem's there are a lot more pie & mash shop's about than I thought. Funny ,it's always the one's you used as a kid that are your favourites.I couldn't stand the one in Tooting Broadway the liquor was to bright green and thick,yet it was only 1 mile away from the one where my nan worked in Earlsfield .I use it now ,as it's the nearest to where I live now...My wife does a good job at making home made pie & mash,though it's really hard to get the right sort of pies.I'll tell you what pie's taste good with home made,them little scotch pie's you get from the bakers,,they dont look right though..Avoid any pie's with onion in ,that just dont work,the mash should be basic ,[no butter or milk,,make the liquor from the packet parsley sauce ,same with that ,dont use milk, just water ,consistency is a matter of taste ,try and make it the same you're favourite pie&mash shop.Still havn't heard any thing from up north..How about unusual dishes you think us Londener's should try.......

There's a chip shop in Ware, Hertfordshire that does jellied eels and pie mash & liquor. It's never really appealed to me, but the hubby says it's lovely.

I just thought of something else,,,I used to go to one somewhere in the Eastend ,[Shadwell I think],and they also sold other traditional London meals ,,here' one I remember ,,savaloy ,peaspudding and faggots,that's really good aswell,,I worked with a Newzealender,and when I told him about pie&mash,he said they have something simliar,,a pie floater!, he said they serve a pie upside down in some sort of mushy peas..Dont know if this is common............

We used to have a good one in Harlow about 10 years ago - but the best one for miles around is Tony's in Waltham Abbey - I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

moved from east london to manchester and haven't found a pie & mash shop :( used to go to kellys on roman road which was fab, although am now a big fan of chips and gravy!

My Uncle Jim (White) used to own a pie & eel shop in Garrett Lane, Earlsfield. During the war my mum used the cellar for an air raid shelter. He ran the place from about 1929 to 1960, when he retired to the Isle of White with his wife Win. They had one daughter Celia.. I have many memories of the shop, and the food was outstanding, pie and mash with liquor every Friday. Best in town. Does anyone remember the White's shop?I live in Vancouver, Canada now, but seeing this web-page has made me hunger for my pie and mash. Thanks for the site. Deet.

Deet,,This is really a coincedence,,my nan worked in the Earlsfield pie & mash shop for years,but there are some strange conflicting information,I'm 50 years old,when I was a kid the pie & mash shop where my nan worked in garrett lane Earlsfield was called Youngs,even when my dad used it thats all he can remember it as. It was run by Bert and Anne,my nan was called Mabel,according to my dad Annes dad who was Dutch and called Orrer had a pie shop in penwith rd but it was bombed ,when Anne married Bert Young,Pop Orrer helped them set the shop up in Garrett lane,that's how it was allways known untill it shut down in the 1980's or early 90's..........

Interesting reply to my e-mail re: pie shop in Garrett Lane. I have a photo in front of me of the shop It says J.W. White - Noted Eel & Pie House. 233 Garratt Lane. I can see my dad Ernie Gates in side the shop, and outside is my mum Doris and Jim White's wife Win.

Hello again Deet,, sadly my nan who used to work in the pie &mash shop in Garrett lane,is no longer alive,all I can think is that it is definatly the same shop,but in my memory I never imagined it belonged to any one else than the 'Youngs'..I will give you a little bit more of the history as I remember it in the 60's& 70's,,,it was so popular the que used to stretch back to Waynfleet street,I think thats the name [the one with the church on the corner] As my nan used to work there, me and my school mates used to go straight to the front,I will always remember a big bottled drink dispenser ,that used to hold Pepsi and another drink you could only get from there called 'Fling',above the machine was a 50's style Pepsi advert featuing a beautifull girl..I could go on but dont want to bore you!..It would be nice to see the photo,but I dont really want to give my email address out on this site,so I might just try and get some old library photo's of Garrett lane,,nice speaking to you though,by for now,,,,,,, Scarecrow.........
