Can anyone explain why walkers 'meaty' flavours such as roast chicken, steak & onion and smokey bacon are suitable for vegetarians but yet cheese and onion and cheesy flavours are not, and do not display the vegetarian logo.

Thi is an educated guess -

the meaty flavours are just that - flavours, and they don;t actually contain any meat products, they are flavoured syntheitcally, and therefore the 'v' symbol is used to indicate their suitabiloty for veggies. The other flavours obviously contain no meat products, so the symbol is superfluous.

That is based on logical thought rather than factual knowledge,. so please feel free to contradict if you know beter.

I would suggest that the meat flavours are just synthetic analogues of the taste molecules found in beef, pork and chicken, whereas the cheese flavouring is derived from natural cheese, which in this case has been made with animal rennet.

Before 2004 Walker's cheese and onion crisps contained rennet - derived from animals and used in all non-vegetarian hard cheeses.

They have now taken the rennet out so cheese and onion crisps are suitable for vegeteraians. However, many cheese flavoured snacks still use animal rennet.

Sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone here but I find it amusing that vegetarians will eat cheese (obviously made from animal milk) but will not eat cheese made using rennet ( an enzyme obtained from cows).
