Didn't know all these facts, but did know that marg was not good for you plus it tasted revolting. Only have butter or if having sandwiches Flora Pro-Life Extra Light. A girl needs to watch her chloresterol levels!
It may be one molecule away, but that one molecule will make the world of difference from it being margerine or plastic. It's a bit like humans and chimps. Supposedly we share 98.5% of the same genetic material. That doesn't make us chimps though. And we wouldn't even be able to successful mate with chimps. That 2.5%, like the one molecule, makes all the difference.
The whole article (and the original question) are laughable as anyone with a basic knowledge of chemistry would know.
Cis and trans refer to molecules with double bonds. Hydrogenation converts doulble bonds into single bonds which cannot be cis or trans.
However, repeatedly using the same unsaturated oil can lead to some of the cis molecules becoming trans. Trans fats are not natural and should be avoided.
Personallly I prefer butter but surely the important point is to eat anything in moderation.
