Question Author
I haven't danced in a garage with a trolley full of bourbon creams for years. I did however once perform the Charleston with a bag of custard creams.

I really don't know, but perhaps they were invented in a shop on the world-famous Bourbon Street in the city of New Orleans, state of Louisiana, in the United States. That street is the "main drag" of New Orleans and the center of the annual Mardi Gras celebration! And a modified French culture is very strong there.

Managed to find this after some trawling the web: 1857 James Peek and George Hender Freans started the company in Dockhead, England. 1861 First export of household biscuits to Australia and later to Buenos Aires, Alexandria and India. 1866 Peek Freans outgrew the Dockhead plant and moved to Bermondsey, England. 1870's Peek Freans products were imported into Ontario, Canada. 1902 Highly successful introduction of the first low-priced biscuit of a shortbread kind, Pat-a-Cake, to the marketplace. 1910 First cream sandwich biscuit introduced, now known as Bourbon. 1924 Established first international factory at Dum Dum, Calcutta, India, expanding into Bombay and Delhi in the late thirties. 1931 Established Peak Freans (Australia) Pty., Ltd. 1949 Production commenced at a Bakery located on O'Connor Drive in East York. Sales increased by 10 to 15% due to guaranteed freshness and the instant availability of product. This Bakery, after several renovations, still produces delicious Peek Freans biscuits. 1997 Marked the 140th Anniversary of Peek Freans biscuits. Today Peek Freans is owned by Nabisco Ltd., and its distribution expands the globe, selling Peek Freans in U.S.A., and Caribbean. Take a break, and enjoy a delicious Peek Freans biscuit. The cookie that has passed the test of time!
