I've never used it to cook meat (although I believe you put the oil in and folks dip their meat in so it cooks according to their own taste), but we used to put chocolate sauce in and dip sponge finger biscuits in. Makes a real mess of the tablecloth, but it's worth it. Have also heard of cheese sauce being used for dipping.
I have always classed a fondue set like the we all have one but nobody uses category.It is more of a keep warm dish.Chocolate Sauce..dip marshmallows in.Cheese sauce..dipcroutons in. Unless the newer ones have changed.
Sure, you can cook cubed or sliced meat and vegetables in it. You're just deep-frying the individual pieces.No more than half fill with the oil, and bring it up to frying temperature on a cooker ring, (it'll take forever just on the burner). Use the burner to keep the oil hot enough. Have sauces and dips with it. See Google for heaps of recipies and advice.
Swiss Cheese fondue -wipe the bowl with some split gloves of garlic and grate in equal quantities of emmental and gruyere cheese. Add grated nutmeg and paprika to taste. Add cup of white wine and put over heat to melt. You can melt the mixture in the mcrowave if you can't wait but dont overcook it or the fats will separate. Mix teaspoon of cornflour with liqueur glass of kirsch and add it to cheese mixture stirring untl it thickens. Keep melted over a low heat. Spear cubes of bread or cocktail sausages on the forks and dip into mixture. Enjoy with white wine and company. Spear the garlic cubes you left in the pot to finish. There are many variations see;

My french famiuly live of fondue - they generally have cheese fondue which is called a raclette and hey have an electric one - it is like a gigantic electric pancake maker on top and around the edges are re little trAYS with handles that fit into slots. each person takes their bit of cheese and puts it on the little tray and then they push it back into the slot and when it has meted you eat it - it is very filling.

they also have fondue with steak too. I think they had oil if you wanted but most people just hold theirpiece of meat which has been cut it into chunks on their skewer and hold it into the aked flame on the fondue maker until it's at your required grading - ie rare to well done.

In france their well done is our rare
