In Hawai'i, which is seeped in japanese culture, we boil them in the pods with salt until tender, and then eat them with beer. The cognescenti have a way of opening the pod and popping the edamame into their mouth without getting the fuzzy stuff on the outside of the pod in their teeth. I am still an amateur, but I am dedicated to this mastery.
P.S. In Hawai'i snacks are called pupus, and when something is good we call it "Ono", and with edamame we might even say "Ono-liscous"
