For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Both spellings are acceptable in the US, Toglet, and that may be where the question comes from: while Washington Irving refers to "doughnuts" in 1809 in his History of New York, contemporary fast-food chains such as 'Dunkin' Donuts' obviously prefer the shortened version. (And no, I'm not Spellmaster or the Anti-Spellmaster!)
In the majority of dictionaries both spellings are used.
