Will my nuts explode??

Hi, just brought some chestnuts from the supermarket and it says you're supposed to cut a cross in them before roasting I have them every Christmas and have never cut them, just thrown them in a hot oven. Have I been doing it wrong all these years?

I always just chuck mine in the oven also, and hope I catch them before the dreaded bang. They will have to put this on them now in case we sue. Health and safety ,we will have to put warnings on our kettles and hot taps next.

Vendors selling roasted chestnuts don't bother cutting them. If the oven door's shut, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. They'd burst before they were finished roasting..
